The project record

Every project we publish carries the same four facts: where it ran, when, who funded it, and what it left behind. Anything we cannot state that way does not go on this page.

Smart gardening at Sabon Gari

A smart gardening farm established with women's groups in Mubi North, producing cucumber, maize and vegetables on plots designed for efficient water use. The programme paired planting inputs with training in climate-smart technique, and closed with harvest going to household nutrition and local market sale.

The plots were laid out for efficient water use rather than maximum area, and the groups running them were trained alongside the equipment being delivered, the two together rather than one and then the other. At close, the harvest went in two directions: household nutrition first, and the surplus to local market sale that funds the following season.

How we run a project

Four steps, in order, every time

  1. Inquiry

We start by asking, and by counting. Field assessment establishes what a community reports needing and what the data independently shows, including where those two disagree.

  2. Design

A programme is designed against those findings with the people who will run it, sized to what can realistically be sustained once external funding ends.

  3. Delivery

Inputs, training and support are delivered together. Equipment without capability, or capability without equipment, produces a photograph rather than an outcome.

  4. Handover

The structures created, from groups and committees to routes to market, pass to the community holding them, and the result is documented so the next programme starts better informed.
