Promotion of mineral resources investment and trade

Nigeria's mineral wealth mostly leaves the communities it comes from. Promoting responsible investment and formal trade is the other half of tackling illegal extraction: if the licensed route is slower, costlier and less accessible than the unlicensed one, enforcement will keep losing.

SDG 9: Industry, innovation and infrastructure

A quarry and crushing operation in Nigeria.

What this involves

Three things this area of work actually consists of

Opening the formal minerals sector to responsible investment and legitimate trade, so that value from extraction reaches the communities the resource sits under.

  • Investment facilitation

Connecting responsible investors with licensed operators and the local authorities who have to live with the result.

  • Formal trade routes

Supporting the licensing, standards and market access that make the legitimate route the practical one.

  • Community benefit

Working so that value from extraction reaches the communities the resource sits under, rather than passing over them.
