Combating illegal mining
Illegal mining takes land, water and often lives, and the people working the pits are usually the ones with the fewest alternatives. Enforcement alone moves the problem. Our work pairs it with land remediation and a route to a livelihood that does not require going back down the shaft.

What this involves
Three things this area of work actually consists of
Tackling unlicensed and unsafe extraction by supporting enforcement, restoring damaged land, and opening safer livelihoods for the communities drawn into it.
Enforcement support
Working with regulators and enforcement bodies on identification, monitoring and the evidence that makes an intervention hold.
Land and water remediation
Restoring sites that extraction has degraded, and protecting the water sources downstream of them.
Alternative livelihoods
Opening routes into safer, licensed work for the households that depend on unlicensed extraction, so enforcement does not simply remove an income.
