Monitoring, evaluation, research and learning
Bincike is Hausa for inquiry, and it is where every other area of our work begins. Our MERL unit collects and analyses the data that shows what a community actually needs, tracks whether a programme delivered it, and documents the result well enough that the next programme starts better informed.

What this involves

Rigorous inquiry that generates the data, insights and scalable innovations informing effective development strategy, and that says plainly when something did not work.
Field data collection
Structured household and community assessment, carried out by teams who live in the areas they survey and can return to verify what they recorded.
Monitoring and evaluation
Tracking a programme against what it said it would do, and reporting the gap between the two without dressing it up.
Research and learning
Turning findings into something a programme designer, a ministry or a funder can act on, including findings that argue against a planned intervention.
